Painter  Sophie Carter 

Sophie is an artist who has developed a sensitive way of working with her materials. By working on gesso primed board or canvas, oil paint is thinned, poured and manipulated so that Sophie can work with the resulting grounds; sometimes rubbing with rags or layering thin, veiled colour to reveal an illuminated skyscape.

The paintings are often started with mixed media; materials react and Sophie works with the resulting grounds to render scapes of the Cornish coast, wetlands, beaches and/or a brow of a hill. However, it is her skies which are so evocative: light through moving clouds, flocks of distant birds moving in formation and an overall ethereal effervescent quality is the aesthetic effect.
